1947 The term ‘Bit’ invented by John Tukey
Born in 1915 in Massachusetts, John Tukey was another famous statistician in the pre data science days. He is important on several fronts and not all regarding statistics. In 1947, whilst working at Bell Labs, he invented the term ‘bit, at least according to the book ‘Annals of the History of Computers’. The bit is short for ‘binary digit’, a term that describes the fundamental 1s and 0s behind computer storage.
